The Number One Undercover, Unexpected Cleaning Agency
Commissioned performances for Infecting The City 2011: Treasure.
Duration: 15 minutes per performance.
Photographers: Sydelle Willow Smith and Chris Saunders.
The theme for the Infecting The City festival this year was “Treasure”. Commissioned to work with the ‘undervalued riches’ of Cape Town, I decided to work with the street cleaners. For three weeks prior to the festival I worked as a street cleaner. During these three weeks of intensive work together we created games/interruptions whereby we all contributed to the final piece. For the duration of a week we became “The Number One Undercover, Unexpected Cleaning Agency”. For a week twice a day we worked our way through St Georges Mall thoroughly cleaning one area each day for 15 minutes. Equipped with vacuum cleaners, dust busters, dusters, clothes, mops, toothbrushes and ear buds we cleaned EVERYTHING: street poles, windows, bricks, shopping bags, which came in our path. If you were in the area even you would be cleaned. By the end of the week people knew the game and were volunteering to be cleaned!
