About the Project

Fuelled by the desire to play with people from all walks of life and inspired by the belief that everyone can draw, “The Portrait Exchange” is inspired by ideas of exchange, structured interactions, and games. The performance is a portrait exchange between me and any willing participant who will sit across from me for a period of time, follow the rules (or break them) and play. After the interaction each will leave with a portrait of the other. It is hoped that my collection of portraits of myself, drawn by the audience, will grow over time.

The Rules of the Game: Draw the other person, but do not look at the page whilst drawing. After the game we sign, date and exchange drawings: you give me yours and I give you mine.

The Portrait Exchange has been performed numerous times in South Africa and abroad since 2015: at the Transitions Exhibition at Museum Africa and GIBS Business School in May 2015, The Turbine Art Fair 2015, Infecting the City and Creative Womxn Conference in 2016. In 2017 the game was played with over 100 people as part of Anthea’s key note for the CounterPlay festival in Aarhus, Denmark. In 2018 it was similarly played again at the Playful Arts festival in the Netherlands.
