The Flag Project

April/May 2017
The Flag Project is a project that aims to celebrate the diversity of Hillbrow through a series of flag making and performing workshops with the children and youth who live in Hillbrow. The project is connected to the Hey Hillbrow! Let’s dlala! festival. The festival was first implemented in February 2016 in Hillbrow, Johannesburg, South Africa and is a partnership between The Outreach Foundation, The Coloured Cube, Have City Will Play! (Anthea Moys) and Hillbrow residents with the intention on becoming an annual festival that celebrates the diversity, which exists in Hillbrow.

The festival for 2017 is hoped to take place on or around Africa Day on 25th May 2017. Hillbrow is home to people from all over Africa. The Hey Hillbrow! festival is about celebrating this diversity through the arts and in so doing potentially combatting xenophobia in the area. The Flag Project wholly ties into this wish, looking to the children and youth in conceptualizing, designing, making and performing this diversity through their own flags. There will be prizes for best flags and best flag performances.
